If you were here, or I was there

If you were here, or I was there,

we’d be together;

bee to honey,

sun ray to diamond,

fridge magnet to fridge,

my hand in yours.

If you were here, or I was there,

our days would swell;

laughter and jokes,

movies and your bed,

naps and caresses,

If you were here, or I was there,

my breath would pass easier,

my heart would be lighter,

my eyes would be sparklier,

my smiles would be quicker.

But you aren’t here,

and I’m so far from there.

I dream of showing you

these metaphors and comparisons

words and feelings

and love.

But you aren’t here,

and I’m so far from there.

So I’ll float around for now,

and hold to me close,

all the people and books and food,

I see, and know you’d crack a smile at.

And hope that, one day,

I’ll smile too.
